What is Chiropractic Functional Neurology?

Your body’s nervous system controls and coordinates all other systems in your body. When there’s an imbalance in your nervous system, that impairs the ability of your nervous system to regulate all of those other systems it controls. This dysregulation of the nervous system can develop into symptoms and disease if left untreated. Those who suffer from migraines, fibromyalgia, dizziness, and chronic neurologic disorders can find relief via functional neurologic treatment.

A comprehensive functional neurological examination will identify which areas of your brain may not be functioning optimally. Given that each side of the body is governed by the opposite hemisphere of the brain (for instance, the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body), most treatments are applied to one side of the body to stimulate the corresponding hemisphere.

Normal Brain Function

Your brain controls and coordinates all bodily functions. Under normal conditions, the cerebellum, located at the lower back of the cranium, transmits signals to both hemispheres of the brain, which then relay messages to the brainstem (comprising the mesencephalon, pons, and medulla). This process is referred to as the Brain Loop.

Your overall health, physical vitality, mental clarity, and emotional stability are all directly linked to the proper functioning of the “Brain Loop”.

When functioning optimally, the cerebellum receives adequate sensory input, relaying appropriate signals to the frontal lobes of the brain, which in turn communicate effectively with the lower brainstem, preventing excessive activation of the mesencephalon.

Abnormal Brain Function

Stress—whether physical, chemical, or emotional—can negatively impact this “Brain Loop”. While stress is not inherently harmful, the pervasive, chronic stress prevalent in our society can be particularly detrimental.

If one side of the cerebellum receives insufficient nerve input, it will be unable to send adequate signals to the frontal lobe, which subsequently fails to provide enough input to the lower brainstem, leading to unchecked activation of the mesencephalon.

The mesencephalon (also known as the upper brainstem, midbrain, or cerebral peduncle) is normally regulated by the brain. When the “Brain Loop” is intact, the mesencephalon remains inhibited.

However, when stress disrupts this loop, the mesencephalon can become overactive, causing the nervous system to enter a sympathetic (fight or flight) response.

Dysfunction in the mesencephalon can lead to a range of symptoms, including fibromyalgia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), sciatica, and chronic pain.

A critical component of the “Brain Loop” is the cerebellum, which governs essential functions such as balance, coordination, postural muscle control, and eye movement regulation. When one side of the cerebellum is not functioning properly, it can result in various common ailments.

An improperly firing cerebellum can lead to persistent muscle spasms on one side of the body, causing imbalances in spinal alignment. This can result in individual vertebrae becoming restricted in their movement, potentially leading to chronic back and neck pain, spinal degeneration, arthritis, disc herniations, and sciatica. Once other pathologies are ruled out, chronic dizziness and balance disorders may also arise as a consequence of cerebellar dysfunction.

How Does Chiropractic Functional Neuropathy Work?

Sound Pain Solutions employs a safe and gentle integration process to reboot, reconnect, and restore proper brain function. Traditional chiropractic techniques and instruments are utilized, but they are applied with precision to enhance functionality in the affected areas of the brain.

Additionally, various modalities such as visual, auditory, and olfactory stimulation, along with heat therapy, eye movements, and specific eye exercises, may be incorporated to promote increased brain activity.

It’s important to note that functional neurology is not used to cure diseases, illnesses, or disorders, nor is it a specific treatment for such. The role of functional neurology is to naturally and holistically re-wire your brain so your body can heal.
